So, its my first day at Cegedim-Dendrite, and what do you know? Russia is through with a 0-1 away win against Andorra, because good old England lost at home to mighty Croatia 2-3.

And all this a few days after that donkey Sergey Ignashevich's series of blunders. Two of Michael Owen's goals on Malafeev's at Wembley, the Rooney scoring at Luzhniki, and then two goals given away to Israel. People highly rate him, his country's best defender they say, but he's been the worst at playing cover to his defensive line. And, in a match against Andorra, he was taken off.

The truth is, Hiddink is a little too lucky to qualify, as Steve (England manager, posing under the umbrella, in the photo) McLaren's men themselves threw away their chances against Croatia twice. Both encounters at Zagreb and London was a case of grim goalkeeping errors.

But you may begin to wonder. First, Gerrard & Co. lost in Moscow, ready to throw their towel. Then Israel beat Russia to revive England's chances. And then, only needing a draw to qualify, they lose. Hence, the title to this article. This can only be a scam.

In the end, Russia's luck was personified by Dmitriy Sychev.

Most policemen in Russia are named Alexandr, Sergey or Dmitriy. Some dogs, as I have found out tonight, are also called the same. But Sychev was a goalscoring striker who got the attempt on goal which took his team to next year's European Championship qualifications. Wouldn't you just want to be a Lucky Dmitry today?

Football is simple. If you got beaten, you don't deserve to quallify. England were beaten by Russia. So, Russia deserve to go to Austria-Switzerland instead of England who, they say, have the best league in the world...
